Tumbla for BeOS R3.2

Thank you for downloading this PowerPC version of Tumbla, The Mail-Server for the BeOS.

The Intel version can be found at BeWare or:
http://littlebig.rsn.hk-r.se/tumbla/

This is just a preview version of Tumbla for BeOS R3, so don't expect too much of the documentation. The lack thereof will be dealt with in the full release. Until then "Share and enjoy"!

Installation

Just unzip the zipfile, and place Tumbla wherever you like. The rest of this documentation will expect Tumbla to live in /boot/home/config/bin/ but it really doesn't matter.

Usage

You can start Tumbla by either doubleclicking on its icon or by typing Tumbla in a Terminal. If you want Tumbla to autorestart after each reboot you edit you UserBootScript and add the following line:

Tumbla &

Adding a user

When you have started Tumbla and have the main window presented to you, you can start adding some users. If no users are present there are not very much use of Tumbla but have no fear. You can easily add a user with the simple but powerful GUI of Tumbla.

All you have to do to add a user is to select the 'new user' item in the 'Current user list' and change the 'Account name' in the 'Account information' box to the email address that you desire. If your computer is called 'littlebig' and is on a subdomain called 'rsn.hk-r.se' and you enter the 'Account name' to read support then your email will be 'support@littlebig.rsn.hk-r.se'.

Note: You can't have two users with the same account name.

You also need to fill in the 'Full user name' where you can enter anything you want. A tip is to keep the account name's owner's name there or some informative text about the account (like if it is a mailinglist).
Then it is time to decide what Tumbla should do with an email sent to this address. If you'd like Tumbla to forward the mail to one or more other emailaddresses (like a mailinglist) you select 'Forward mails to:' and then enter the emailaddresses in the box below, one on each line.
If the email is to be saved on the local harddisk you select 'Save received mails in maildir' and selects a path though clicking on the button labeled 'dir:' and select a path in the fileselector that pops up or by simply entering the path.

Note: You can't have an email both saved and forwarded.

Then we are up to the task of acctually adding this account. It goes by pressing the 'Add' button in the 'What should I do with this user?' box.

Modifying a user

To modify an existing user you select an user from the 'Current user list'. The user's current values are shown in the 'Account information' box. Now you can edit any information about this user. When you are satisfied with the changes you press the 'Modify' button in the 'What should I do with this user?' box. If you select another user wityout saving the data the entered information will be lost.

Deleting a user

When an emailaddress at your computer is no longer valid you can easily remove it from you list of emails by either select it in the 'Current user list' or type the name in the 'Account name' box and then pressing the 'Delete' button in the 'What should I do with this user?' box.

Mailinglists

To create a mailing list you do exactly as if it were an ordinary user. The only thing that you have to make sure is that the mailinglist is set to forward mails or it won't be a mailinglist. Then you add all the emailadresses of the subscribers in the "Forward mails to:" box one emailadress on every line.

Receiving mails

The mailreceiving process is fully automated. When you have started Tumbla and made sure that there are (at least one) user(s) and a SMTP-server is set anyone can send him/her an email.

Settings

If you press the 'Settings' button in the main window you will be presented with the 'Tumbla server settings' window. It will have a string with the dns name of the SMTP-server in your BeOS Email preferences. If you aren't satisfied with your default SMTP-host you just enters another here. If you'd like to save the changes you click on the 'OK!' button else on the 'Cancel' button.

WARNING: Although Tumbla is a SMTP-server it is NOT recomended that you set your SMTP-server to your own computer. It is better to point it to your ISP's, school's or work's SMTP-server.

About

If you click the 'About' button a little dialog will pop up and display some information about
Tumbla. Press the 'OK' button to dismiss the popup and return to the program.

Close

When you press the 'Close' button the main window will hide itself at the deskbar. Press on the 'Tumbla' icon in the DeskBar and select Tumbla in the popupmenu or simply just doubleclick on the icon to bring up the window again.

Note: If you set Tumbla in the FileTypes to be a background application then Tumbla won't show up in the DeskBar andyou can only double click on its icon to bring it up again.

Quitting

To quit Tumbla you just press the quit button in the titlebar. You can also give it a not as merciful death by just killing all its threads in a 'Terminal' or TManager e.g. or simply using the Vulcan Death Grip on it.

Drag-and-drop

If you drag a Person file over certain parts of Tumbla you will notice that there comes up a yellow box. When the box appears it means that it's safe to drop to Person file. If the yellow box is over the list named 'Current user list' when you drop it, a new user will be added using the Persons nickname as the new users name and the Persons email as the address where to forward mails sent to this user. Else, if the yellow box is around the box named 'Forward mails to:', the Persons email is being added to the 'Forward mails to:' box.
If no yellow box is visible when dropping a Person file on Tumbla it will do nothing.

TUMBLA WILL ONLY USE THE EMAIL, NAME, AND NICKNAME FROM A PERSON.
