<h1>Antiword</h1>

<h4>Version 0.37 (21 Oct 2005 -- BeOS Jan 2006)</h4>
(BeOS port)
<hr width="20%">
<P><font size="-2">(This is an expanded version of the original author's ReadMe.)

<h3>Introduction</h3>
Antiword is an application to convert Microsoft Word documents to either
Postscript or plain text. This latest version will now also generate PDF,
'formatted text' and XML (DocBook) output.
The manual page for <b>antiword</b> is <a href="antiword man page">here</a>,
and there is a (Unix-oriented) <a href="Docs/FAQ">FAQ</a> and other stuff in
the <a href="Docs">Docs</a> folder.
<P>
This BeOS version has a couple of added '<b>xicon</b>' scripts to allow drag-and-drop
of Word files. The antiword program itself is identical to the Linux version
except as to the directories in which it expects to find its files.
<P>
<BR>

<h3>Licence and Source Code Availability</h3>
This program is distributed under the GNU General Public License - see the
accompanying <a href="Docs/COPYING">COPYING</a> file for more details.
<P>
The entire source code is available from the original author's website (below),
so is not included here. It compiles unchanged under BeOS.
All that is needed is an appropriate Makefile, which has been stuffed into
the Docs folder here if you should need it.
<BR>

<h3>Installation</h3>
For convenient use from anywhere, <b>antiword</b> should be in your path,
preferably in <tt>/boot/home/config/bin</tt>. The program itself requires
resources that must be in <tt>/boot/home/config/apps/antiword</tt>.
<P>
You could move (or copy) the files yourself, but a (bash) script has been provided
as a more convenient method. Double-click on the '<b>Install</b>' icon and
-- after prompting for permission -- the files will be moved for you. (They
are moved, not copied, to avoid consuming extra space). The files not
used by the executable remain where they are.
<P>
After a successful installation, the script renames itself as '<b>Uninstall</b>'.
Double clicking this lets you reverse the installation process, moving the files
back into their original places in the folder. To completely uninstall the package
you should then delete this folder itself.
<P>
The provided xicon scripts (see below) can be placed anywhere convenient to you,
but of course will be of little use if
<a href="http://www.bebits.com/app/843">xicon</a>
is not installed in your system.
<BR>

<h3>Package Contents</h3>
In this folder you will find:<ul>
<li>The <b>antiword</b> program compiled for PPC BeOS R5.
<li><b>Resources_BEOS</b> -- a folder containing the files needed by antiword
for its operation (must be moved to a recognized location -- see <B>Installation</b>).
<li><b>Install</b> -- Installation script; see above.
<li><b>antiword man page</b> -- An HTML version of the manual page for the
program.
<li><b>T-antiword</b> -- A xicon script that you can drop Word files onto
to convert them to plain text. The output file will be in the same folder,
with the same name, but with any '<tt>.doc</tt>' extension removed and
'<tt>.txt</tt>' appended.
[To use this and the two following two you will need xicon installed.)
<li><b>P-antiword</b> -- A xicon script that you can drop Word files onto
to convert them to Postscript. The output file will be in the same folder,
with the same name, but with any '<tt>.doc</tt>' extension removed and
'<tt>.ps</tt>' appended.
<li><b>GS-antiword</b> -- A xicon script that you can drop Word files onto
to have them displayed by Ghostscript if you have this installed (no permanent
files are generated by this script). I'm not sure if this will work on a PPC
system, or what changes it might need to do so &mdash; Caveat Usor...
<li><b>testdoc.doc</b> -- a short test Word document (from the original package).
<li> In the <B>Docs</B> folder, you will find:
<ul>
<li><b>FAQ</b> -- Frequently Asked Questions ...for the Unix version, but
aside from directory locations and sys-admin stuff it mostly applies.
<li><b>COPYING</b> -- The GNU GPL guff.
<li><b>History</b>
<li><b>Changelog</b>
<li><b>Makefile.BEOS</b>
</ul>
</ul>

<h3>Problems</h3>
Any bugs found in antiword itself should be reported to the program's author with
full details of how to
get the problem to occur, but don't <i>expect</i> support for a product that you
have not paid for!
Please include Antiword's version number and version date, otherwise you
make it impossible for the author to help.
<P>
If you have problems with the xicon scripts, you can report them to Pete Goodeve
(but <i>don't</i>, of course, bother antiword's author, who is not responsible!).

But PLEASE read the FAQ before you write!! (This refers to the Unix version,
but the differences are probably obvious -- Pete.)
