2013-10-11 William R Sowerbutts will@sowerbutts.com I finally got around to pulling my BeBox Dual603-133 out of the loft. I watched an EEVblog video on YouTube recently where Dave Jones tore down an old Acorn Archimedes and the internal battery had leaked electrolyte everywhere, it filled me with fear that the same would happen to my BeBox! Fortunately it has a lithium cell which is less likely to leak, I understand, but I replaced it anyway. After a quick visual inspection I found that the machine would power up (hooray!) but would not boot; the PATA hard disk was "stuck". I removed the disk, gave it a firm whack, and it successfully spun up, so I immediately imaged it -- this resulted in the file "wrs-pata-hdd-image.dd.gz". Unfortunately inspection of the partition map indicates that this includes only a Linux installation. While I had it out of I decided to also image all of the floppies and CDs that came with it, just in case they die one day, and in the hope that one day they are useful to someone. I also scanned any useful/rare documentation I could find lying around. In addition to this I have two large ring-bound copies of the "Be Book" which is largely API documentation, but they look like they were printed out from PDFs or similar so I expect they can be found online. 2025-10-04 William R Sowerbutts will@sowerbutts.com I'm in "publish now so people can archive this stuff" mode. Here we go!
